Thomas Dean provides proofreading, copyediting, and full editing for style and substance.

Dean is a skilled and experienced editor in the worlds of general public, academic, and professional writing.  He has a very sharp eye for audience and purpose, organization and form, and grammar and mechanics.

Dean has edited two essay collections, has served as freelance editor for the Ice Cube Press, and has edited two academic newsletters. He has acted as an editor or consulting editor for two publications by a major university press, a university alumni magazine, and numerous university annual reports, strategic planning reports, and other documents and publications. Dean has also served as a textbook reviewer for three major academic presses (Prentice-Hall, Houghton Mifflin, Heinemann). In addition, he has served as a referee for such publications as The Annals of Iowa, Iowa Heritage Illustrated, The Journal of Men’s Studies, JAEPL: Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning, and Anthrozoos.  He has also served for 20 years as a Reading and English test item and unit writer as well as a test content reviewer for ACT.

Dean is well-versed in the Chicago Manual of Style and the MLA Style Manual, and he has a working familiarity with the APA Publication Manual.

With over 25 years of writing teaching experience and an extensive personal writing and editing background, Thomas Dean can provide you with an overall critique that focuses on organization, development, audience, and style. Speechwriting

Thomas Dean is in his ninth year as speechwriter to university Presidents. During that time, he was worked with three Presidents and two Interim Presidents, each of whom has had a different voice and academic background (biochemistry, law, medicine, business and management, and molecular biology). In addition, Dean has done speechwriting for other university administrators, Board of Regents members, and the president of a major medical association.

In writing for university Presidents, Dean has worked on the gamut of issues:  the liberal arts and sciences, education, leadership, economic development, academic policy, medicine and health care, diversity, internationalization, athletics, public engagement and volunteerism, public policy, philanthropy, social issues, student success, and so forth. His speeches have also been for a wide variety of audiences, including academics, politicians, the business community, students and parents, and community groups.
